Xylitol gum is something I have been trying out for the past week.
I decided to purchase it after reading a lot of research regarding its health benefits.
Chewing gum typically contains either sugar or an artificial sweetener – neither of which is ideal. Xylitol gum uses xylitol which is a sugar alcohol.
It turns out, chewing xylitol gum has been shown over and over again to reduce dental caries. It also can reduce plaque accumulation.
This may not seem too earth shattering due to the fact that many chew gum to improve their oral health, but it was surprising to me to see other health benefits beyond what is to be expected with chewing gum.
Xylitol gum actually has an anti-inflammatory effect and can help with mouth sores, specifically angular chelitis.
The xylitol in gum also has a positive effect on satiety preventing over-eating. For those with metabolic issues, xylitol gum increasing satiety is obviously a major plus. In addition though, xylitol is a low calorie sweetener and reduces caloric intake as opposed to gum with sugar in it.
Besides being used in chewing gum, xylitol can be used as a sweetening ingredient in various recipes. Before substituting your whole sweetener supply with xylitol though, keep in mind that excessive amounts can lead to GI distress. Used in the right amounts, it can also benefit those with constipation.
One last note: For those with dogs at home, keep the xylitol away. It is very toxic to dogs.
Xylitol gum tastes good and has health benefits to boot. So, enjoy!
Make it a great week,
