I stumbled upon this study about tea vs. coffee.
It is very interesting research because of how many people were studied and the 10 year span it took to produce the data.
The study is linked here, but I’ll get to the point right away.
Women and men aged 55-69 were studied over the course of 10 years in the Netherlands. They provided their lifestyle and dietary habits.
At the 10 year mark, the researchers looked at the mortality rates of both the men and women and this is what they found:
Men: Exclusively drinking coffee was positively related to cancer and cardiovascular disease. Rather than consuming 100% coffee and no tea, consuming tea 30-50% of the time led to the lowest mortality rates.
Women: Higher coffee intake was related to lower mortality. Higher tea consumption was related to increased mortality. Drinking exclusively coffee or drinking tea up to 40% of the time led to the lowest cause of mortality.
This study is really cool, but it’s important to point out that this is a cohort study.
A cohort study is designed to take place over a long period of time. Variables are controlled, but not as much as higher qualities of research such as Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) or Meta Analysis (combining data from many RCTs to draw conclusions.)
In brief, this is simply a correlation of the data and not a causation.
Regardless, I found this information valuable to share with you.
I freakin’ love coffee. I drink it multiple times daily as it does have many health benefits. You can read about the health benefits of coffee by clicking here.
This article talks about coffee and colorectal cancer.
But I can guarantee you that as a male, I will be opting for tea 30-50% of the time from now on.
It’s getting warmer too, and a nice cold glass of unsweetened ice tea also sounds nice. 😀
Have an awesome day!
