To gamify something is exactly how it sounds. Take aspects of a game and apply it to something that is not a game. People have been gamifying behavioral change and having success. Take a behavior / habit that you either want to create / break and gamify it!
Let’s say you want to work on being more punctual. We all know punctuality has to do with good time management. Creating a game out of this may make being on time a more common occurrence.
There are lots of apps that influence behavior and will gamify the process. For example, there are apps that help people quit smoking, increase physical activity, or reduce stress levels. These apps have point systems, celebrate streaks, and may even create levels for users to strive toward.
I personally know people who quit smoking tobacco just by using apps that have gamified this behavioral change. They credit part of their success to the apps they used.
How can you use this information?
Take any habit you want to break or start. Let’s stick with being punctual.
For every minute you’re early, you get a point.
Points can be cashed in for rewards.
Apply a reward system to rewards you’ll actually strive for.
10 points = $10 credit for a store you like
20 points = Lunch out with a friend
50 points = A 60 minute massage
Keeping track is the only part you’d have to pay attention to. Hey, they may even have an app for being more punctual that’s gamified this already.
What behavior will you break or start using the gamify method?
